Outline
Intellum Social Chat lets you chat directly with a peer, start a group conversation dedicated to a topic, or participate in a conversation around a learning activity, all without leaving Intellum's platform.
Social Chat is built into the experience of both the Social web and mobile apps. If your organization has enabled Social Chat, you'll find the chat icon included in your navigation panel.
For more info about accessing the mobile apps experience, please see the following article:

Use Social Chat
Get Notified
If it's your first time accessing Social Chat in a web browser, you'll be prompted to Enable desktop notifications. Desktop notifications alert you to new messages and mentions from Social Chat. Click the linked text to enable desktop notifications for Social chat in your browser.
You'll see an unread dot notification appear on the Social Chat icon whenever you receive new messages or are mentioned in a Social Chat.
Start a Conversation
Click Start New Chat to start a new chat conversation. Select a member from the list to add to the conversation and click Chat.
Your most recent conversation is always found at the top of the list. Chats with new messages are always bumped to the top of the list.
Alongside messaging, you can also share links, attach files, or, if you so choose, communicate only in emojis — no judgement here.
Start a Group Chat
Social Chat lets you connect one-on-one, but it also lets you connect to the expertise and interests of your teams and peers by creating group chats.
To create a group chat, follow the steps below:
- Click Start New Chat in the top left corner in Social Chat.
- Search for and select the users for the group chat.
- Click Chat to create the group chat.
Add or Edit a Group Name
- With the group chat open, click the gear icon to open Chat Settings (or Channel Settings).
- Click + Add a Chat Name under Chat Name (or Edit under Channel Name).
- Enter a new name for the group chat. Please note that adding a name for the first time will turn the chat into a channel.
Click Save to the right of the new name to make the change.
Get Their Attention
Sometimes you may need to call another member's attention when having a conversation in Social Chat. When you send a message and include an @mention, the person you mention will get notified to follow up.
Leave a Group Chat or Channel
To leave a group chat or channel, click the gear icon in the chat and click Leave This Chat or Leave This Channel.
Add Content
Share links and attach files to your Social Chat messages. In the web app, sharing a video link from YouTube or Vimeo embeds the video in the message window.
When you attach a file to a message (images, videos, pdf, etc.) Social Chat embeds the file and makes it playable or accessible within the message thread.
Review or Remove Content
Social Chat allows you to edit or remove any message you send - including messages with links or files attached.
Reply & React
Use the emoji selector in the message field for quick replies, or add a reaction to individual messages with an emoji reaction.
The emoji selector gives you the option to change the color of your emoji set.
Social Chat also supports markdown in messages and gives you the option to add an emoji via text — put the name of the emoji between two colons, for example:
Social Chat Within Learning Activities
Your organization's admin can embed Social chats within learning activities in the Intellum platform. If available, you can use this space to share resources; compare notes; or connect with instructors, experts, and peers.
If a group chat is included in an activity, you'll see the Open Chat button. Click Open Chat to launch the chat room within the learning activity.
You can choose to launch a Social group chat outside of the learning platform by clicking the Open in Social button on an embedded chat or following a direct link shared by an instructor or administrator.
Heads Up!
Check your browser's cookie if you are having trouble launching chat within an activity.
